Why concrete fails
The Base Decides Everything in Concrete Work
A beautiful finish on a weak base is a slab waiting to fail. Frost heave, settling, and cracking all start below the surface. That's why the excavation, gravel depth, and compaction matter as much as the pour itself. When we show up, we measure the site, assess drainage, and build a base that won't move when the ground freezes and thaws a dozen times each winter.
The slab thickness, reinforcement, and air-entrained mix come next. Then control joints cut at the right spacing and depth let the concrete shrink predictably instead of cracking randomly. A concrete patio or epoxy garage floor that lasts 20 years starts with prep work that most crews rush through. We don't.
The sequence
How Concrete Gets Poured in Laval
-
Site visit and written quote
We measure, ask about finishes and drainage, then leave you with an itemised estimate. No obligation, no sales pitch.
-
Tear-out and base prep
Old concrete comes out, the site gets excavated and graded, gravel goes down and gets compacted in lifts so it won't settle.
-
Forms, pour and finish
Forms are set, concrete is placed and screeded level, then finished broom, stamped or exposed. Control joints are cut to plan.
-
Cure, seal and handoff
The slab cures under cover, then we walk it with you, explain the timeline and show you how to care for it.
Durability starts here
Three Factors That Make Concrete Last
First is the foundation. Compacted gravel, proper slope for drainage, and the right slab thickness for the load. Skip this and you're building on sand. A concrete driveway or shop floor that settles unevenly will crack no matter how well you finish it.
Second is the mix and the joints. Air-entrained concrete resists freeze-thaw cycles. Control joints cut at the right depth and spacing let shrinkage follow the line instead of creating random cracks across the surface. This applies to everything from a concrete sidewalk to a warehouse floor.
Third is protection. The finish texture provides grip and appearance. Sealing keeps water, de-icing salt and stains from penetrating. Our maintenance guide shows you how to keep it that way for decades.
Common questions
Laval Concrete Questions, Answered
Straight answers on cost, timing, durability and what to expect during a pour.
Our old driveway was cracked end to end and heaving by the garage. The crew tore it out, rebuilt the base properly, and poured a new broom-finish slab in a day. One winter later it is still dead flat, and the written quote was the final number.
They stamped a slate pattern across the whole patio and ran a walkway out to the fire pit. The colour matched the sample, the control joints are tucked into the pattern so you barely see them, and they cleaned up like they were never here.
I needed a shop floor that could take a two-post hoist and a winter of road salt off the truck. Polished and sealed, perfectly level, zero dust. They worked around my hours and the finish still looks new.
Footings and a foundation wall for a garage addition, all poured to the engineer's drawings. The inspector passed it on the first visit and they sent photos at every stage since I could not be on site. Easy to deal with start to finish.
